Engelse vertaling - 'Far superior'
Some other of his lesser pieces were
published about this time; and in 1759
the
translation of Gresset's Ver Vert, a mock heroic poem, in
four cantos. In 1764 all
these, with the exception of the Ver Vert and The Estimate
of Life, which are now
added, were published in one volume by Dodsley, whom he allowed to
take that liberty,
and who informs us, that they were originally written for the
author's amusement, and.
afterwards published for the bookseller's profit.
(...)
...almost a perfect copy of the original,
and far superior to the coarse version since published by the late
Dr. Geddes.
Coopers translation has been reprinted (source:

Papperle: Duitse bewerking in proza

Wetenschappen in Freiburg.

1760 Papperle: Duitse bewerking in
proza
Gleim (1719-1803; zie
1767). Götz verdiende aanvankelijk de kost als huisleraar. In
Over Krenner:
'Remota IV, “Franz Krenner’s Lascivious Books,” contains sexual
literature, including illustrated French erotica, collected by
Bavarian finance official Franz von Krenner. The collection was
acquired by the library in 1819, but has only been included in the
general catalog since the 1960s.'

Jean-Baptiste. Ver-vert; or, the Parrot of Nevers: a Poem, in

Edition.
Printed for J. Cooke; and sold by J. Bell ? and J. Johnson ?
London, Oxford 1793 - Second edition of this translation, first
published the same year (same pagination). Vert-vert was the poem
which made Gresset famous in the 1730s, the tale of a pampered
parrot which, on a journey between his home in a convent in Nevers
and another in Nantes, picks up some shocking language from its
fellow travellers, to the mortification of the nuns. It had first
appeared in English in 1759, translated by John Gilbert Cooper. The
present version is by Alexander Geddes. 4to (253 × 205 mm), pp. vii,
[1], 48; inner margin of title and final page reinforced, light
foxing and the odd stain elsewhere, early ink ownership inscriptions
to title; disbound. [Jackson, p. 188.]

Italiaanse vertaling
Zij
verbleef in 1802-1803 afwisselend in Parijs en Milaan. Haar man

'A reviewer of The Poetical Register

Vertaling in het Latijn door
Carolus Alexandre
Jaap Engelsman:

THIS story is the subject of one of the most
agreeable poems in the French language, and has the additional
piquancy of having been written by the author when he was a Jesuit.
The delicate moral which is insinuated against the waste of time in
nunneries, and the perversion of good and useful feeling into
trifling channels, promised to have an effect (and most likely had)
which startled some feeble minds. Our author did not remain a Jesuit
long, but he was allowed to retire from his order without scandal.
He was a man of so much integrity as well as wit, that his brethren
regretted his loss, as much as the world was pleased with the
acquisition. (…) Gresset wrote other poems and a comedy, which are
admired; but the Parrot is the feather in his cap. It was an
addition to the stock of originality, and has greater right perhaps
than the Lutrin
to challenge a comparison with the Rape of
the Lock. This is spoken with deference to better French
scholars ; but there is at least more of Pope's delicacy and
invention in the Ver-Vert than in the Lutrin; and it
does not depend so much as the latter upon a mimicry of the
classics. It is less made up of what preceded it.
I am afraid this is but a bad preface to a prose
translation. I would willingly have done it in verse, but other
things demanded my time; and after wistfully looking at a page or
two with which I indulged myself, I renounced the temptation.
Readers not bitten with the love of verse, will hardly conceive how
much philosophy was requisite to do this : but they may guess, if
they have a turn for good eating, and give up dining with an epicure.
I must mention, that a subject of this nature is of
necessity more piquant in a Catholic country than a Protestant. But
the loss of poor Ver-Vert's purity of speech comes home to all
Christendom ; and it is hard if the tender imaginations of the fair
sex do not sympathize everywhere both with parrot and with nuns.
When the poem appeared in France, it touched the fibres of the whole
polite world, male and female. A minister of state made the author a
present of a coffee-service in porcelain, on which was painted, in
the most delicate colours, the whole history of the "immortal bird."
If I had the leisure and the means of Mr. Rogers, nothing should
hinder me from trying to out-do (in one respect) the delicacy of his
publications, in versifying a subject so worthy of vellum and
morocco. The paper should be as soft as the novices' lips, the
register as rose-coloured ; every canto should have vignettes from
the hand of Stothard ; and the binding should be green and gold, the
colours of the hero. |

Gresset,
de vriend
van mijn jeugd
And I here conclude this
very tribute of long remembered gratitude towards the men who took
such pains to drill my infant mind, and who formed with plastic
power whatever good or valuable quality it may possess.
poet.) And as for the friend of my youth, the accomplished
Gresset, whose sincerity and kindness will be ever embalmed in my
memory, I cannot shew my sense of his varied excellencies in a more
substantial way than by making an effort—a feeble one, but the best
I can command — to bring him before the English public in his most
agreeable production, the best specimen of graceful and harmless
humour in the literature of France. I shall upset Vert-Vert
into English verse, for the use of the intelligent inhabitants of
these islands ; though I much fear, that to transplant so delicate
an exotic into this frigid climate may prove an unsuccessful
experiment.

Francis Sylvester Mahony
(1804-66), the creator of Father
Prout and the Oliver Yorke of Fraser's Magazine, was,
like Maginn, a native of Cork, and even more scholarly, accomplished,
versatile, witty, and gifted with facile and felicitous utterance in
prose and verse. He was educated at St Acheul, the Jesuit college
at Amiens, and in Paris ; among the Jesuits he lived, as he said,
in an atmosphere of Latin, and became a first-rate Latin scholar. He
was admitted to the Society, taught in an Irish college, but for
extraordinarily unconventional irregularities in a seminarist (including
coursing and deep drinking) was pronounced to be no longer a Jesuit
in 1830, and, obtaining with some difficulty priest's orders in
1832, officiated at Cork. But erelong he quarrelled with his bishop,
and, settling in London, became one of the writers in Fraser's
Magazine ; and during 1834-36 he contributed a series of papers,
afterwards collected as The Reliques of Father Prout. From
the gay tavern life of the ' Fraserians,' Mahony went abroad and
travelled, 1837-41, in Hungary, Greece, and Asia Minor. He became in
1846 Roman correspondent of the Daily News, and his letters
were in 1847 collected and published as Facts and Figures from
Italy, by Don Jeremy Savonarola, Benedictine Monk. For the last
eight years of his life—quite Bohemian, though latterly his wit
became more caustic and his ways less sociable—he lived chiefly in
Paris, and was the correspondent of the Globe, his letters
forming the chief attraction of that journal. He died reconciled to
the Church. A volume of Final Memorials of Father Prout,
published in 1876 by Blanchard Jerrold, sufficiently illustrated
Mahony's wonderful facility in Latin composition, his wit, quaint
sayings, genial outbursts of sentiment, pathos, absurdity and satire
jumbled together, and a certain reverence for religion among all his
convivialities. James Hannay said of him : ' Mahoney's fun is
essentially Irish—fanciful, playful, odd, irregular, and more
grotesque than Northern fun. In one of his own phrases, he is an
Irish potato, seasoned with Attic salt.'
Much of
the fun of the Reliques arises out of Father Prout's
regretful proof that the best songs of some of the most admired
modern authors are the merest plagiarisms or translations from
ancient Greek, mediaeval Latin, or old French originals, which he
solemnly produces with dates and all necessary particulars to
authenticate them—the poems and the facts all alike out of his own
head. And he often pursued his jest beyond the limits prescribed by
piety to the dead and by good taste, and the fun evaporates in
tedium or annoyance. Father Prout declares himself to have been the
son of Dean Swift by Stella, to whom the Dean had been privately
married ; and the Dean's madness was wholly occasioned, not by the
causes usually alleged, but by the kidnapping of this (purely
supposititious) son by William Wood, the halfpenny hero whom Swift
denounced.

Our own acquaintance with the Original
is only very recent; but, like those alliances that take place on a
sudden from some uncontroulable affinity, it at once became an
intimacy: and the rareness of allusion to it, from which it would
appear to be but little known in this Country, was an additional
inducement to endeavour at giving it that currency among ourselves
to which it seems so well entitled. |

Een
zeldzame Nederlandse bewerking
Uitspanning
Men weet, het
(Wanneer
Gij
jonger zusters, die, aan de oogen
Der
spijtige oudsten soms ontvlugt,
't
Weerhouden hart en spraakvermogen
Geeft
in dit eenzaam boschje lucht,
Beheerscht
een oogenbik uw tongen,
Verneemt
ons onverduurbaar wee,
Of,
is 't te veel u afgedwongen,
Spreekt,
spreekt dan, maar klaagt met ons meê
Een
enkel woord verklaart u onze smarten:
Met
Lorre rusten hier onze aller teed're harten.
Nogtans
Doch zij waren genoegzaam onbekend gebleven…

Over Meerheimb:
Januar 1896 in
dem benachbarten Loschwitz.
M. bethätigte schon früh litterarische Neigungen. Zunächst in
